History of The Club
The history of our club building goes as far back as the 18th Century, and was officially opened for members in 1920. The actual beginnings of the club are not entirely clear, but it is thought that informal plans began some years before formalising the club, with the leasing of the present building.
What we do know
On the 19th June 1920, a Mr C. Mercer along with a group of friends saw their efforts to form a Working Men’s Club come to fruition. They formed a committee and rented the ground floor rooms of the current building, which had formerly been the Rose Coffee House - Cyclists Rest - Good Beds. The number of members quickly rose to 170, and today we welcome 1000 members who enjoy a very warm welcome at the heart of their community.
